We’ve been here long enough to watch cafés open, trend, and close — and to learn which ones are actually worth your morning. Not the ones with the best lighting for Instagram. The ones where you can get a genuinely good flat white, eat something that makes your body feel ready for a surf session, and still be at the beach before 08:30.
This list is our personal shortlist. All of them are walkable from Casa Roca.
1. Motion Café (180m — 2 min walk)
Motion is our closest café, and arguably the most underrated on the strip. It’s not glamorous — wooden tables, simple décor, a small kitchen — but the coffee is consistently excellent (they use single-origin beans from Flores), the acai bowls are generous, and it’s never as crowded as the Instagram-famous places.
Order: Long black + papaya bowl with house granola Best time: 07:00–09:00 before the digital nomads arrive with their laptops Vibe: Focused, quiet, local crowd mixed with surfers
2. Old Man’s Kitchen (200m — 2 min walk)
Old Man’s is primarily known as a bar — sunset beers, live music, the legendary social hub of Canggu. But their kitchen opens for breakfast and it’s one of the most solid options for a full meal before surfing.
Order: Nasi Goreng with a fried egg (IDR 45,000) or the Eggs Benedict on sourdough Best time: 08:00–10:00 when it’s still calm before the day crowd builds Vibe: Relaxed, beachy, the terrace looks directly at the surf
3. Crate Café (700m — 8 min walk)
Crate is the coffee-nerd’s choice on Batu Bolong. Industrial aesthetic, natural light through large windows, and a coffee program that takes itself seriously without being pretentious. The pastries change seasonally and are usually excellent.
Order: Filter drip coffee (IDR 35,000) + croissant with cultured butter Host tip: Arrive before 08:30 to get a window seat. By 09:30 it’s full and the line starts. Vibe: Remote worker crowd, design-forward, a bit louder once full
4. Shady Shack (1.2km — 15 min walk or 5 min scooter)
Technically a bit of a walk, but Shady Shack is worth including because it’s one of the few genuinely plant-based cafés that feels effortless rather than preachy. The garden setting — lush, shaded, rice field views — makes it one of the best mid-morning spots in Canggu.
Order: Halloumi wrap + fresh cold-press lemongrass juice Host tip: The Sunday special board usually has a seasonal collaboration dish that’s worth checking. Vibe: Garden café, plant-based, quiet and spacious
5. Warung Ibu Oka Locals (by the market, 300m)
This one doesn’t have a website or Instagram — it’s a small warung run by a local family near the Batu Bolong traditional market, open from around 06:30 until they sell out (usually around 10:00). Nasi Campur with at least eight different side dishes, served on a banana leaf.
Order: Just say “nasi campur satu, pak” — they’ll handle the rest Price: IDR 15,000–20,000 per plate Host tip: Bring cash, eat early, and understand that the chaos is part of the experience Vibe: Authentic, local, extremely delicious
6. The Lawn (450m — 5 min walk)
The Lawn is primarily a beach club but their daytime café service is excellent and underutilized for breakfast. The view — directly over the surf lineup — is hard to beat. Slightly more expensive than the strip cafés but worth it once per trip.
Order: Smashed avocado + cold brew coffee + freshly squeezed young coconut water Best time: Weekday mornings when it’s quieter Vibe: Elevated, beachy, expensive but worth it occasionally
7. Nusa Penida Coffee (600m — 7 min walk)
A small specialty coffee cart that has quietly become one of the most-talked-about coffee stops on the strip. The owner sources directly from Nusa Penida and roasts in small batches. No food, just coffee — but if coffee is your priority, this is the best espresso on Jl. Batu Bolong.
Order: Espresso or cortado (IDR 28,000–35,000) Takeaway or stand at the counter — no seating Vibe: Purist coffee spot, regulars only, nods to familiar faces
A Note on Timing
Canggu’s café culture runs on surfer hours. Most of the best spots are busiest between 08:30 and 10:30. If you want the best experience:
- Early birds (07:00–08:00): Warung Ibu Oka, Motion Café, Old Man’s Kitchen
- Mid-morning (08:30–10:00): Crate, Shady Shack, The Lawn terrace
- Coffee-only stop anytime: Nusa Penida Coffee
All seven of these are within an easy walk or short scooter ride from Casa Roca.
If you’re planning a trip to Canggu and want to stay within walking distance of all of these, check availability at Casa Roca here.
