Batu Bolong is one of those rare surf breaks that manages to be both beginner-friendly and genuinely satisfying for intermediate surfers. A mellow right-hander that peels over a sandy-bottom reef, it sits at the very bottom of Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong — which means if you’re staying at Casa Roca, your board is in the water within three minutes of leaving your room.

Here’s what you actually need to know.

Understanding the Break

Batu Bolong breaks as a right-hander (facing the shore) over a mixed sand-and-reef bottom. The wave is long, forgiving, and rarely closes out all at once — which is why it’s been a teaching ground for surf schools and a favourite for longboarders for over a decade.

Wave type: Right-hander, beach break with reef sections Best for: Beginners to intermediate, longboards, mini-mals Consistency: Very consistent April–October; smaller and mushier November–March Crowd level: Busy by 08:00, manageable before 07:00 and after 16:00

Reading the Tides

This is where most visitors go wrong. Batu Bolong is very tide-dependent.

Best conditions: Mid to high tide At low tide, the reef becomes exposed and the wave becomes shallower and more unpredictable. Mid-tide (roughly two to three hours either side of high tide) produces the longest, most consistent rides with the safest ocean floor distance.

Check tide charts: The most reliable free tool is tideschart.com — search “Batu Bolong, Canggu.” The Balinese tide cycle means you usually get two highs and two lows per day, roughly six hours apart.

The golden windows most days:

  • 06:00–08:30 — first light session, clean surface, offshore wind
  • 16:30–18:00 — afternoon tide push, golden hour light, less crowded

Wind & Swell Direction

Offshore wind: Southwest to southeast (blows away from shore, cleans up the wave face). This typically occurs in the morning during dry season (April–October).

Onshore wind: Picks up around 11:00–13:00 most days, making conditions messier. This is when most experienced surfers get out and get breakfast.

Swell direction: South to southwest swell (standard Indian Ocean swell) works best here. A ground swell of 1.0–2.0m is ideal. Above 2.5m it gets powerful and more selective about who should be out there.

Local Lineup Etiquette

Batu Bolong is a democratic wave — but it has an unwritten social contract. Follow these and you’ll be welcomed back.

1. Don’t paddle straight to the peak Paddle around the break, not through it. Paddling through an active lineup is dangerous and disrespectful.

2. The person deepest (furthest out) has right of way Don’t drop in. Ever. It’s the cardinal rule of surfing worldwide, and Batu Bolong has enough eyes to notice.

3. Greet the locals A nod and a smile goes a long way. Many of the regular surfers at Batu Bolong are Balinese locals who grew up on this wave. Respect their priority and their home.

4. Know your level If you’re a beginner, stay toward the shoulder of the wave (the less critical section), not at the peak where more powerful waves break. The surf schools operate in specific zones — stay clear unless you’re with one.

5. Don’t surf directly in front of the surf school zone There’s an informal zone near the south end of the beach where surf lessons happen. Give the beginners space — they need more room and can’t control their boards as well.

Renting Boards Near Casa Roca

You don’t need to bring a board from home. There are five or six board rental shops along Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong within a three-minute walk of Casa Roca.

Typical rental rates (2025):

  • Softboard (foamie): IDR 50,000–70,000 per hour
  • Longboard: IDR 75,000–100,000 per hour
  • Mini-mal: IDR 60,000–80,000 per hour

Full-day rentals are usually 2–3x the hourly rate. Ask to inspect for dings and fin condition before you take it.

Surf Lessons

For first-timers, the surf schools directly on Batu Bolong beach are professional and safety-conscious. Expect:

  • Group lesson (2 hours): IDR 350,000–450,000 including board and instructor
  • Private lesson: IDR 500,000–700,000
  • All schools provide rash guards and the first part of the lesson is on the beach

Our front desk can connect you with our preferred surf instructor for a seamless morning session arranged from your room.

What to Do When It’s Flat

Batu Bolong goes flat a few days per year, usually during swell gaps in the wet season (December–February). On those days:

  • Echo Beach (1.5km north) picks up more swell and breaks in different conditions
  • Berawa is more consistent in smaller swells and suits shortboarders better
  • Pererenan is the least crowded option and often has waves when Batu Bolong is completely flat

Casa Roca is 200 meters from Batu Bolong Beach — you can hear the waves from your balcony on a big swell day. If you want to book a room for a surf trip, check availability here.
