The default Bali advice is consistent: rent a scooter, it’s the only way to get around. And for most of Bali — Ubud, Uluwatu, the temple roads of east Bali — this is true. But Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong is an exception worth knowing about.
If you’re staying at Casa Roca (or anywhere else on Jl. Batu Bolong within 500m of the beach), you can design your entire day without a scooter. Here’s what that actually looks like.
A Day on Foot from Casa Roca
06:45 — Morning coffee at Motion Café (180m) Wake up, shower, walk two minutes south. Get a long black and watch the surfers check the conditions while the street is still quiet. Catch the sea breeze. Take your time.
07:30 — Hit the water Batu Bolong Beach is 200m from our gate. Walk down, rent a board from the shop on the corner, get in the water. The morning glass is usually pristine until around 09:00 when the wind picks up.
09:30 — Breakfast at Old Man’s Kitchen (200m) Come out of the surf, rinse off, walk back. Old Man’s opens their kitchen at around 08:00. Order Nasi Goreng or eggs. Sit on the terrace and watch the next set of surfers paddle out.
11:00 — Walk the strip north Jl. Batu Bolong has one of the better collections of boutique shops in Canggu — surf wear, local design, crystals, vintage. Walk north from Old Man’s past the row of shops toward the Lawn. Take an hour. It’s a flat walk.
12:30 — Lunch at The Lawn (450m) The Lawn’s daytime menu is underrated. Sit in the shade, order something with fresh fish, and watch the surf lineup. The walk here from Casa Roca takes less than six minutes.
14:00 — Return, shower, rest One of the advantages of being close to the beach: you can actually come back to your room between activities. No 30-minute scooter ride back from a distant villa. Walk back, shower properly, lie down for an hour. This is what it means to be well-located.
16:30 — Afternoon tide session If the tide charts looked good, go back out. Afternoon glass sometimes comes back as the sea breeze settles. The beach is 200m. You know this already.
18:30 — Sunset at Old Man’s (200m) Walk down for a Bintang. The sun sets directly behind the break. Wednesday evenings have live music. This is the Canggu cliché that’s a cliché because it’s genuinely good.
20:00 — Dinner on the strip Walk back toward Casa Roca. Stop at whichever warung or restaurant catches your eye. There are at least eight solid dinner options within 400m of our gate.
22:00 — Return to your room Walk back. Two minutes. Close the door. The AC is quiet. The street noise has settled. Sleep.
Why Location Actually Changes Everything
The standard Canggu experience — rent a scooter, fight traffic on Jl. Raya Canggu, park at each destination, repeat — is fine. But it’s also surprisingly tiring, and the traffic is genuinely bad during peak hours.
The Batu Bolong strip offers something different: a walkable micro-neighborhood where the things you actually want (surf, coffee, food, beach, sunset) are all within 600 meters of each other.
This is why our guests consistently report that they used their scooters far less than they expected. Not because they didn’t want to explore — they did, and they did — but because their daily rhythm was handled entirely on foot.
When you do need a scooter from Casa Roca:
- Echo Beach (1.5km north) — 5 min ride
- Seminyak dining scene — 25 min ride
- Ubud — 60 min ride
- Airport — 45–60 min ride
For everything else: two legs and a good pair of sandals.
Casa Roca is 200 meters from Batu Bolong Beach. If this sounds like the Canggu experience you want, check room availability here.
