Short answer: stay in Batu Bolong if you want to walk to the beach, cafés and surf without renting a scooter. Choose Berawa for a calmer, more upscale feel, Pererenan for quiet rice-field views and long stays, and Seminyak if nightlife and big-name restaurants matter more than a short walk to the waves.

We run a guest house on Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong, so we are biased toward our own street. The comparison below is based on how far things actually are from Batu Bolong and what guests tell us they wanted from their trip.

Batu Bolong: the walkable centre

Batu Bolong is the most central and walkable part of Canggu. Jl. Batu Bolong runs straight to the beach, and cafés, surf schools, restaurants and ATMs are within a short walk. It is busy but not chaotic.

Choose it if you want to surf in the morning, eat at a café, and come back to your room between activities without a scooter. See our guides to cafés on Jl. Batu Bolong and walking Canggu without a scooter.

Think twice if you want total silence. Weekend evenings can be noisy on the main road, and a guest house set back from it helps.

Berawa: calmer and more upscale

Berawa is about 2.5 km north of Batu Bolong. Streets are wider, traffic is lighter, and it is home to Finns Beach Club and a good selection of villas and boutique hotels.

Choose it if you want space and quiet but still want Canggu’s restaurants nearby. It works well for couples and families.

Think twice if you want to reach the beach or cafés on foot. You will usually use a scooter or a ride-hailing app.

Pererenan: the quiet end

Pererenan is Canggu’s most relaxed neighbourhood, with rice fields, less traffic and a slower pace. It suits longer stays and travellers who prefer quiet over convenience.

Think twice if you only have a few days. Getting to the main cafés and surf spots takes more time.

Seminyak: more developed, more nightlife

Seminyak is a different experience from Canggu: more developed, with larger restaurants and a stronger nightlife scene. It is about 25 minutes from Batu Bolong by scooter.

Choose it if nightlife and shopping are the priority. Think twice if your plan is mostly surfing and slow mornings, because you will spend more time in traffic.

What does it cost?

Within Canggu, prices depend more on the type of stay than the neighbourhood. As a guide for a dry-season night:
